![]() R+N 4 AFRICA is a grassroots organization realized by two local
nursing students, Ruhina Rana and Nicole Moen, who aimed to raise funds for a volunteer project in Tanzania, Africa. Each were direct hands-on
participants there during the summer of 2009. This venture is facilitated and
further supported by an international NGO ‘Volunteer Africa’ and their partner Tanzanian NGO ‘HAPA’. They aided in community development and
the establishment of primary health care in rural communities. Currently, they hope to continue to raise funds to support the development of a healthcare centre in a rural community. Your
contribution will support this goal in addition to helping bring clean water, essential education and basic medical
care to some of the poorest people in the world.
__________________________________________________ Volunteer Africa Volunteer Africa was established in 2001 and is an international not for profit organization that works with Tanzanian Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) to help develop health, education, and good governance in rural communities. VA is operated almost exclusively by volunteers and provides opportunities for people from around the world to work on community initiated projects in developing countries. Volunteers, once selected must fundraise the program fee, which is used to fund the community projects (eg: building a clinic), and pay for the volunteers’ accommodations, meals, and transportation. HAPA (Health Action Promotion Association) is one of the Tanzanian NGOs that VA works in collaboration with. The word HAPA means “here” or “this place” in Swahili and they believe that where one is located is the essential starting place for facilitating development. Therefore, all projects are chosen by the community, not determined by foreigners, and initiated by the community. Their approach focuses on participation and thus empowerment through helping improve one’s own community. Primary health care is that which fulfills people’s basic health needs and it focuses on prevention. In developing countries, many people have limited access to primary health care because aid is usually used to ‘fix’ the problems rather than prevent them. We need to provide communities with the knowledge and resources to promote and maintain their own health. “Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will eat for life” … and if he is well taught, then he will teach others. This is the philosophy of Volunteer Africa. www.volunteerafrica.org | Thanks for helping us meet our goal! We have returned from Africa...
